Welcome to the Homepage of the Minimum Wage Commission (the Commission).

The Commission, established under the Minimum Wage Ordinance (Cap. 608), is tasked with an important function of reporting to the Chief Executive in Council its recommendation about the statutory minimum wage (SMW) rate.  In making its recommendation, the Commission needs to maintain an appropriate balance between the objectives of forestalling excessively low wages and minimizing the loss of low-paid jobs while sustaining Hong Kong’s economic growth and competitiveness.  I am delighted and honoured for being appointed as the Chairperson for the first term of the Commission and entrusted with this important and challenging mission.  The Commission gathers wise counsel from a wide spectrum of the community, with Members comprising distinguished individuals from the labour sector, business community and academia as well as senior government officials.

The SMW, at an initial rate of $28 per hour, comes into effect from 1 May 2011 and marks a new era in labour protection.  The SMW rate would have far-reaching effects on various sectors of the community.  In fulfilling the Commission’s mission, I work closely with Members in an objective, evidence-based and balanced manner by taking full account of various social, economic and employment factors, the empirical findings of surveys and research studies as well as the views of various stakeholders.

Your support to our work is indispensable.  This Hompage provides information on our work with latest development.  You are cordially invited to find out more about the Commission by visiting the Homepage.  Your suggestions and feedback are welcome.
